Rising from the ashes like a phoenix in stunning leather outfits dipped in black eyeliner and glittery nail polish, JULIEN-K continues to be a witness to innovation and reinvention in the music industry. Born from the remnants of the famed band Orgy, JULIEN-K embodies the visionary artistry of Ryan Shook and Amir Derac, two bands fearlessly exploring creative frontiers. In an exclusive interview, Shook shares insights about the band’s origins, their transformation journey, and their ongoing project, Dark Mode.

JULIEN-K’s beginnings date back to the gradual dissolution of metal band Orgy in the mid-to-late ’90s, which prompted Shuck and his collaborators to embark on a journey of self-discovery and musical evolution. “JULIEN-K emerged organically from the ashes of Orgy, who were trying to redefine their artistic identity,” says Shuck. This period of transition helped the band grow and shape their unique aesthetic and sound.

Reflecting on JULIEN-K’s musical trajectory, Shook highlights the band’s focus on defying convention and exploring uncharted musical territory. “We aimed to fuse the dark, brooding atmosphere of Depeche Mode with the raw energy of guitar-driven rock,” he explains. This innovative fusion has become the cornerstone of JULIEN-K’s signature style, one that proudly stands out in the fast-paced, ever-evolving music industry.

The burgeoning band’s early days took an unexpected turn when an auspicious collaboration with Sega to produce the soundtrack for the Sonic the Hedgehog video game ultimately thrust Shook into the spotlight as the lead vocalist of JULIEN-K. “That was a seminal moment that propelled JULIEN-K into new realms of recognition and creative exploration,” Shook recalls. Embracing his role as frontman, Shook and his bandmates broadened their lyrical horizons, garnering praise and accolades along the way and building a somewhat rabid fanbase.

JULIEN-K’s musical contributions beyond the stage have gone beyond everyone’s favorite little blue hedgehog in high-tops. The band’s unique sound has been featured prominently on the soundtracks of Michael Bay’s billion-dollar global box office Transformers franchise, as well as numerous indie films. Shook believes the band’s early success is simply down to a willingness to embrace diversification and adaptability. “We’ve always been drawn to projects that push the boundaries and challenge the status quo,” he says.

In challenging this status quo, one element of JULIEN-K’s curated identity is one that resonates deeply with fans: the band members’ fondness for tattoos, which Shuck describes as a form of self-expression and rebellion. “Tattoos have always been an important part of our aesthetic and identity,” says the frontman, explaining that his tattoo collection is like capturing a moment in time forever. “Tattoos serve as a visual representation of our journey and commitment to authenticity.”

Dark Mode is the band’s current focus, and they’ll be completing their highly anticipated tour. The ambitious project represents a departure from their previous work. “Dark Mode is an aural exploration of shadow, a journey into the recesses of the human psyche,” Shuck asserts. Funded through a successful Indiegogo campaign, Dark Mode shows JULIEN-K’s willingness to evolve and change, embodying a darker, electro-punk vibe and offering a less lyrically heavy production for dedicated fans to dive headfirst into.

Delving into the creative process behind Dark Mode, Shook describes it as a collaborative effort fuelled by experimentation and introspection: “We wanted to challenge ourselves and our audience to push the boundaries of what electronic music can be,” he explains. The result is a sonic array that seamlessly blends darkness and pulsating dance beats, defying genre categorization and captivating listeners with its raw emotion and energy.

Reflecting on JULIEN-K’s position as outsiders in the music industry, Shuck asserts, “We’ve always walked to our own rhythm and refused to be boxed in by genre labels or industry norms.” Nonetheless, Shuck remains committed to JULIEN-K’s loyal fanbase, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and true connection.

Much of JULIEN-K’s loyal fanbase can be attributed to the fact that the band members are extremely proactive when interacting with listeners, spotting familiar faces in the crowd and personally doing community outreach activities themselves. JULIEN-K’s dedication to their fans is rare in today’s music industry and should be celebrated.

Shook details the challenges of growing up in the music industry, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. “The music industry can be unforgiving at times, but we have learned to embrace the journey and stay true to ourselves,” he reflects. Through dedication and determination, Julian K has carved out a niche for himself, earning the respect and admiration of peers and fans alike.

JULIEN-K’s story is one of resilience and innovation amidst the music industry’s all too strict constraints. With dark mode lighting the way and a dedicated fanbase in tow, JULIEN-K continues to push boundaries and defy norms, cementing their place as pioneers in electronic evolution. Through their music, tattoos, and unwavering commitment to rebellious authenticity, JULIEN-K’s bandmates stand as a force to be reckoned with in the world of electro-death pop, inspiring countless people to embrace creativity and forge their own path in the pursuit of artistic excellence.
